| Fine Lines and Wrinkles
Fine Lines and Wrinkles are a natural part of ageing. As skin ages, it becomes thinner and more easily damaged, this process is intensified by the fact that the skin also looses its ability to repair and renew. This process causes skin to sag and decrease in elasticity, causing the skin to produce fine lines and wrinkles. Temporary wrinkles, which can become permanent, are also caused by skin dehydration and a loss of collagen in the skin, due to natural ageing, external aggressions and medication.
Wind, heat and chemicals and the natural effects of ageing cause a certain amount of wrinkling in everyone, however this natural process is amplified and accelerated in people who spend a lot of time in the sun. Years of exposure to the sun cause "photoageing," which includes freckles, yellowing, roughness, visible blood vessels, and dark spots, as well as wrinkling. This can be prevented by a reduction in sun exposure and the wearing of a UVA and UVB sunscreen of at least SPF 15 each day, even in winter.
As a person ages sweat and oil glands diminish in function and some shut down production, this causes the skin to loose natural moisture and dry out, resulting in a sagging effect as collagen (the elastic band of the skin) needs a moist environment to maintain its strength. The skin around the eyelids, jaw and neck have a small number of sweat and oil glands to begin with and therefore, they are some of the first places on the face to demonstrate ageing and wrinkling. A good means of supporting the skins’ natural network and providing the skin with the conditions it needs to rebuild and replenish with age, is by using a good and easily absorbed moisturiser.
Another means of preventing dehydration and deterioration of the optimum conditions in the skin is to use a mild non-soap cleanser and alkaline soaps, especially those with deodorants and perfumes should be avoided. This is because harsh, over sulphate based alkaline cleansers cleanse the skin by stripping the skin of their natural oils. This leads to an enhancement of the natural ageing process.
The best long-term prevention for wrinkled skin is a healthy lifestyle with daily exercise to keep circulation moving, a diet with plenty of whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables, staying out of the sun or wearing sun-screen and on-going methods for reducing stress and tension.
Some cosmetic ingredients have been shown to give smoothing results, managing to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
Retin-A, Renova - This ingredient has been shown to be an effective way of reducing many of the signs of aging, such as mottled pigmentation, roughness, and wrinkling. Creams containing this ingredient are recommended for use on an ongoing basis and can at first produce redness and peeling.
Alpha-hydroxy acids. These are the so-called "fruit acids" and include glycolic and lactic acid have also been shown to produce a smoothing effect.
Antioxidants. These include preparations that contain the vitamins A, C, and E, as well as beta-carotene. These creams may provide a certain amount of sun protection as well as an improvement of wrinkles.
